I walked in wearing a golf polo, and before I could even get to the counter, the employee looked me up and down and asked if I’d come from the golf course. I hadn’t — but before I could answer, she looked me over again, said “damn,” and then “yikes,” with a level of disdain I still can’t quite process from someone I’d never met. She followed up by asking if my friend and I were in a fraternity. We said no. She kept the same disgusted expression on her face anyway, made a series of strange faces, and never once asked what we wanted to order. At that point we just left. As we walked out, she said “bye” — several times, each one more condescending than the last. I don’t know what assumptions she was making about us or why, but it was enough to turn us away without buying anything. Judging customers on sight before they’ve said a word isn’t a great look for any business, let alone an ice cream shop. Left a genuinely bad taste in our mouths — figuratively, since we never got the chance to try the actual product. Won’t be back.

Respectfully, worst customer service out of all ice cream places I’ve been to. I visit this location often since I live in the area. The ice cream has always been phenomenal, and the service has been unpleasant and bad every single time without fail. We’ve ran into workers who didn’t greet us or say thank you at all, and earlier today when my friend and I were just chatting and having ice cream in front of the store, the female employee walked up and slammed the door on us during business hours Having good ice cream shouldn’t be an excuse for shitty customer service. We will make a switch to Miharu down the street from now on.

My 5 stars go to Kia, the rockstar woman running the counter Saturday night, all on her own! She blew me away with her Formula 1 speed as she filled cups and handed out samples to a fully packed shop teeming with impatient customers. We were happy to be there but we wanted our ice cream...now! I don't know if it's her training or just who she is, but Kia has a way of staying calm amongst the chaos while providing unmatched customer service... and pretty tasty ice cream, to boot. When you hurriedly approach the counter eager to get in your order, she smiles at you genuinely (and you have to wonder how exactly she keeps it all together so well!) and asks how she can help. Then she asks if you have a preference for how you want your scoops, something I've always had to request myself at an ice cream shop. She moves quickly, filling your cup with some generous scoops, then rings you up (with another smile) in one fell swoop! Please give this girl a raise, or better yet a promotion - you don't find great employees like this very often.

I will fight anyone and everyone who dislikes this place. The quality of ice cream here is so good, and the gentleman running the place is very kind! I forget the name of the flavor I got but it's very unique (closer to some sort of Kulfi ice cream I've had before), and I can confidently say that I enjoyed it!

Humphry Slocombe on College Avenue is one of Berkeley’s best ice cream spots—friendly vibe, consistently delicious, and reliably creative. If you’re a chocolate fan, the hot fudge parfait and fudge brownie delight are both standout choices. The fudge is rich without being overly sweet, and the brownie is dense and satisfying. The floats are fantastic, too. Blue Bottle cold brew float is perfect if you like a caffeine kick; it’s creamy, refreshing, and nicely balanced. The bourbon coke float adds a little boozy fun—great for an afternoon treat when you’re feeling laid-back. Even the Fanta float hits a nostalgic sweet spot, bright and cheerful. Don’t miss the boozy affogato either. Espresso and a splash of booze turn it into something special—for when the right mood hits. Humphry Slocombe is exactly what you’d expect in Berkeley—casual, friendly, with top-notch ice cream and creative combinations. Always worth dropping by.
